I picked up ground sirloin on the way home from work last night and gave Moe a choice of burgers or Shepherds Pie. He choose Shepherds Pie. It was still too hot to turn on the oven in the house, so I baked it in the little Waring Oven that I keep in the back room off the kitchen.
When our son “Matt” lived at home, this was one of his favourite dinners. Probably one of the first things he learned to cook for himself.
This is how I make Shepherds Pie. Just a basic outline. It is all done to taste.
Lean ground beef
Saute meat until browned. Add the chopped onion, garlic and celery. Saute until vegetables are tender. Season with salt pepper, thyme. Sprinkle with flour. Cook for a minute or two and add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 30 minutes or so. Pour into shallow casserole and top with mashed potatoes. Dot with butter and bake until golden.
