Shepherds Pie

I picked up ground sirloin on the way home from work last night and gave Moe a choice of burgers or Shepherds Pie. He choose Shepherds Pie. It was still too hot to turn on the oven in the house, so I baked it in the little Waring Oven that I keep in the back room off the kitchen.

Shepherds Pie is one of those meals I like to call “diner” or “comfort” food.
When our son “Matt” lived at home, this was one of his favourite dinners. Probably one of the first things he learned to cook for himself.

I use the same recipe to make Mince and Tatties.

Shepherds Pie

This is how I make Shepherds Pie. Just a basic outline. It is all done to taste.

Lean ground beef
fresh thyme
Worcestershire sauce
beef broth

Saute meat until browned. Add the chopped onion, garlic and celery. Saute until vegetables are tender. Season with salt pepper, thyme. Sprinkle with flour. Cook for a minute or two and add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 30 minutes or so. Pour into shallow casserole and top with mashed potatoes. Dot with butter and bake until golden.

Shepherd's pie is one of my all time favorites! YUMI am quite envious of your piped potatoes. I tried making duchess potatoes a while back and made a terrible glop of them. May I ask what sized tip you used? Do you rice the potatoes first?

Hey, I hate to be a stickler, we all grew up eating this as shepherds pie, but shepherds pie is actually made with ground lamb. The same dish made with ground beef is cottage pie. No matter what you call it, it is delicious, just sayin!

  6. Yes, I know that the correct name is actually Cottage Pie and that a real Shepherds Pie is made from Lamb. But this dish made with ground beef is commonly referred to as \”shepherds Pie. Kind of a \”generic name\”. By any name it is a favourite \”comfort food\”.~Ann
