I’m not a fan of BBQ sauces,
but I have always loved this sauce that came from the
Tunnel BBQ Restaurant in Windsor, Ontario.
This restaurant was in business from 1941 until it closed it’s doors in 2014.
A few years back I was given a copycat recipe for this sauce.
It is pretty close in flavour to the original.
And it is very easy to make. No cooking involved.
It is made from ingredients that most will have on hand.
Although, every time I make it I have to go out and buy a bottle of ketchup.
This sauce is the only thing I make with ketchup
Not something I ever have on hand.

Wonderful on wings and ribs.
The recipe is very simple and doesn’t require any cooking.
The original recipe called for also adding 1/4 cup of sugar, which I exclude.
I love about this sauce is that it isn’t overly sweet.
The ketchup is sweet enough without adding more sugar.
TBQ Sauce
1/2 cup Ketchup
1/2 cup prepared mustard
1/2 cup vinegar white
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/4 cup white sugar. (Optional)
Place all ingredients in a blender and mix. Store in the fridge.
Will last for months.
I think this recipe is pretty close to true. My only comment would be that this sauce is fermented and the sweetness of the sugars will settle as they get converted to alcohol and vinegar. You will get more depth of flavour over time if you use sugar in the form of white, brown or even corn and molasses syrup.
Thank you for your comment Pete. I actually leave most of the sugar and sometimes I don’t add it at all. The original TBQ sauce is the first BBQ sauce that I ever liked. My husband introduced it too me back in the mid 70’s. He grew up in Windsor. I’ve never cared for sweet bbq sauces, I preferred the more savory. I find that the ketchup adds more than enough sweetness. Ketchup isn’t something that gets used in my house, except for when I’m making a batch of TBQ sauce.
